I have some wonderful news to share.After nearly two years of being unable to make it, Prairie Dust is finally back!
When I first started White Bear Linens, I asked one of the dye companies I work with to create several special “color recipes” for me.Prairie Dust was born from one of those recipes.
Unfortunately, one of the dyes used in the formula was discontinued by the manufacturer.
When we had to switch to dyes from another company, I could no longer reproduce the same shade.
For a while, I gave up on Prairie Dust and focused on dyeing other colors that I could still make with the recipes available to me.
Even so, Prairie Dust was always somewhere in the back of my mind.
And for a long time, I carried a small sense of frustration with me.
Then one day, I thought:
I can’t keep letting this feeling settle quietly in my heart like sediment.
Dye companies have always felt a little intimidating to me, so it took some courage to reach out.
But when I finally did, the president of the company very kindly offered to hold a special lesson for me on how to create my own color recipes.
Last September, I drove all the way to Hiroshima to attend.I had been working with dyeing almost entirely on my own for so long, so being able to talk about all the questions I had, the things I had noticed about formulas, more efficient ways of dyeing, and even the difficult and fascinating sides of the process was such a joy.
There were so many moments of:
“Yes! Exactly!”
I went there to study, but looking back, I mostly remember the two of us happily chatting about dyeing all day.
I brought everything I learned that day back home with me, and from there, I began another long round of trial and error.
It certainly wasn’t easy, but at last, a new Prairie Dust was born.
This was a color I truly wanted White Bear Linens to have.I love stitching reproduction samplers, and for a long time I had been searching for a linen color that could create a quiet, antique atmosphere while still feeling somehow both old and new.
A shade like a little cloud of dust drifting across a dry prairie.
It has a subtle green undertone, with the yellow kept to an absolute minimum, bringing the color closer to a calm, grayish tone.
It was exactly the kind of atmosphere I had been looking for.
I would be so happy if you chose to stitch with it and made it part of your own work.
And this time, there is one more special color to share.Moss Garden
This shade appeared unexpectedly during my trial-and-error process while recreating Prairie Dust.
A deep, muted grayish green.
At the moment, it is difficult for me to reproduce exactly, so only a very small quantity is available.
I hope you will also enjoy this accidental color — one that may never appear in quite the same way again.
I hope to continue dyeing Prairie Dust for many years to come.May it become a color that stitchers will love for a long, long time.
