“Alice Meets the Caterpillar” stitched on Brick Dust

“Alice Meets the Caterpillar,” designed by Kyoko Maruoka.
I can’t even remember when I first discovered this chart—
perhaps more than ten years ago?
All I know is that I’d wanted to stitch it for ages,
but I could never find a fabric color that felt just right.

And then… life surprised me.
During those ten years, I somehow ended up starting my own hand-dyed linen shop,
and without even realizing it, I had dyed the perfect fabric color
for this very design.

When I wondered what to stitch on the persimmon-colored Brick Dust,
I thought a Halloween piece might be fun,
but it clearly wouldn’t be ready in time for this year’s Halloween…
So I kept thinking, Is there a chart that suits this color?

And then—ping!—it suddenly came to me.
This fabric would be perfect for Maruoka-san’s Alice!

Once I realized that, there was no turning back.
I felt so excited, I just had to stitch it.

And as I stitched,
I found myself quietly moved,
thinking how unpredictable and wonderful life can be.

The two little main characters were just too adorable, and they kept me company through such a joyful stitching time.I was especially impressed by the designer’s sense of color—how a deep orange and a raspberry shade, which should have clashed, instead blended into a perfect mushroom gradient, or how unexpected colors formed flowers and leaves in such delightful ways.
Every stitch brought a fresh surprise, and as much as I wanted to keep stitching, I felt a little sad when the finish line came into sight.

And in the midst of this whirlwind of colors, Brick Dust held everything together beautifully—it really gave its best this time!

When Alice and the Caterpillar are not in the frame…arranging the photos in reverse order makes it feel as though the two have finished their performance and quietly left the stage. There’s a certain wistfulness to it, isn’t there?

That said, these photos were taken simply to show the fabric color clearly—and they confirmed something for me: Brick Dust can truly support a wide range of designs.
I’m confident it will shine in many different projects.
